Hydrangea Cuttings - now is the time to root them

I discovered how easy it is to root hydrangeas - and how quickly they grow the first year in the ground. So, if your neighbor has some shrubs you've been admiring, now is the time to act!  Easy steps:

  1. Take a cutting from a branch of the hydrangea shrub about 5-6" long. Most experts say the cutting will work best if taken from a branch that did not flower this year.
  2. Remove the lower leaves of the bottom two leaf nodes.
  3. Cut largest leaves down to about half their size (literally, just cut the leaves in half)
  4. I root mine in jars of water. Some people have better luck rooting directly into soil.
  5. Place cuttings in bright light. NEVER PLACE NEW CUTTINGS IN THE SUN. They should be placed in a bright shady area.
  6. Watch for roots and plant in soil once roots are several inches long.
